Artists working with children

22 February 2010Remember the huge community concern that was sparked in 2008 when photographs by Bill Henson were seized from a Sydney art gallery? They were images of children and to some they were sexualised images of children.

As a result of the anxieties and concerns which that incident unleashed, a set of protocols for artists working with children was developed by the federal arts funding agency, the Australia Council. Their protocols came into effect just over a year ago and they apply to all artists seeking funding from the council.

The Council is now reviewing these protocols to see how well or otherwise they're working. One of the interested parties is the National Association for the Visual Arts, NAVA, who thinks the protocols are unnecessary.

Amanda speaks with Tamara Winikoff, the executive director of NAVA, and also with Kathy Keele the Chief Executive Officer of the Australia Council.
