Australia's 'smart power': the Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence

Smith AO, Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence, discusses the way ahead for the Centre, set up in 2008 by the Rudd Government to develop 'national civil-military capabilities to prevent, prepare for and respond more effectively to conflicts and disasters overseas'. The presentation on 13 May 2009 covered the key people and organisations the Centre deals with and particularly how the Centre will seek to work with international partners and relevant non-government organisations, and some of the challenges faced in these interactions.

In May 2011 the Federal Government announced that the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) would commence operations from 1 July 2012 and that it would initially be responsible for determining the legal status of groups seeking charitable, public benevolent institution, and other not-for-profit (NFP) benefits on behalf of all Commonwealth agencies.
