04 March 2011Twitter is now a major player in the media world.

Social media is playing a significant role in Libya with activists using Twitter to organise protests and call for Colonel Gaddafi's resignation.

What began as a means for often inane chit-chat and gossip is now becoming a tool for news gathering and, as we are seeing in the Middle East and North Africa, it's even a means for aiding a revolution.

But what impact does this direct and very short messaging system have on the gatherer of news, the journalist, editor, or commentator?
