Growing numbers of highly motivated people are ignoring the old charity model and creating a new model of social entrepreneurship, setting up new types of organisations that not only deliver social good but also are financially sustainable – even profitable. This bottom-up movement has started despite, and not because of, the old system of cheque-book philanthropy and government welfare.
