Reason and responsibility: how effective aid is delivering results

17 October 2011As part of the Lowy Institute's Distinguished Speaker Series, Mr Peter Baxter, Director General of AusAID, discussed Australia's aid program and the critical role of development aid in an increasingly interconnected global community. Mr Baxter answered the critics of the Australian aid program, some of whom argue for a scaling back of our aid and development activities. Not so, says the Director General, who made a compelling case for the escalation of Australia's aid commitments and charted the way forward for a stronger and more effective aid program.

In May 2011 the Federal Government announced that the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) would commence operations from 1 July 2012 and that it would initially be responsible for determining the legal status of groups seeking charitable, public benevolent institution, and other not-for-profit (NFP) benefits on behalf of all Commonwealth agencies.
