OOHC not working for at-risk kids

In a letter in the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday, July 15, Reverend Harry Herbert, the executive director of Uniting Care NSW, peddled emotive disinformation about the crisis in Australia's increasingly unaffordable out of home care (OOHC) system.

According to Reverend Herbert, policymakers should increase spending on 'more services' to support parents and prevent children being removed from the family home at large cost to state government budgets. He warns that unless governments stump up extra cash to fund organisations such as his own, we are at risk of creating another Stolen Generation of Indigenous children.

In May 2011 the Federal Government announced that the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) would commence operations from 1 July 2012 and that it would initially be responsible for determining the legal status of groups seeking charitable, public benevolent institution, and other not-for-profit (NFP) benefits on behalf of all Commonwealth agencies.
