Which aged care problem?

DEEP IN THE MESS that is my desk, I have a copy of a Dilbert comic strip that I keep for its cautionary value as well as its humour. The last block of the strip has an obviously frustrated Dilbert screeching at his boss, saying through clenched teeth: “You are solving the wrong problem!”

I have now been at Anglicare SA nearly a year and a half. Almost half of Anglicare’s activity is working with older South Australians; which means I am hearing more frequently than ever that we are an ageing society...

Can an older mother enjoy motherhood with meaningful paid work sidelined while her children are young? Or pay the price of juggling if both are to take centre stage? What is it like to contemplate being in your fifties or sixties and caring for a teenager when your friends and family who started earlier are retiring and leading ‘the good life'?

These are hard questions with no easy answers that Marie Roberts, a psychologist and doctoral student at Swinburne University, is exploring in her research into delayed motherhood.

Alzheimer’s Australia is looking for individuals with dementia and family carers who are interested in being actively involved in all stages of dementia research as part of the Consumer Dementia Research Network.  Members of the network will be involved in setting funding priorities, monitoring projects and communicating findings.
