Description

Foreign students are required to sit the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas students before moving onto university studies, but standards have been low and enforcement lax.

From next year, students will have to pass an English test before they can start an Australian degree and the requirement will be extended to include the vocational education sector.

The Federal Education Minister, Simon Birmingham, said the more stringent testing is important for the integrity and and quality of the Australian education system, and to its continuing appeal to international students.
