This paper highlights the growing Defence engagement occurring within Southeast Asia and what it means for Australia.
Indonesia is starting to loom large in the thinking of the Defence Department and Huxley discusses the opportunities as well as challenges for building defence ties between Australia and Indonesia. Huxley also argues for Australia to look beyond Indonesia, and in particular to Singapore and Malaysia to build defence ties. Ties that will be crucial in ensuring Australian security and regional stability in the decades to come.
Australia should be conscious of the challenges as well as the opportunities inherent in its efforts to build closer defence cooperation with Indonesia, and should simultaneously make every effort to enhance further its existing strong defence relations with Singapore and Malaysia.
