It is time the non-conservative political parties rethought their position on families, argues Julianne Schultz in her introduction to Griffith REVIEW 10, Family Politics. Equating family with mum dad and the kids behind a white picket fence completely misses the point that family is much more diverse than it has ever been, and – however it is defined – remains the most important element in the lives of most people.
