In May 2006, PLR payments totalling just over $7 million were made to 8923 eligible creators and publishers in respect of the 2005–06 fi nancial year. In addition, $10.408 million was distributed under the Educational Lending Right scheme for 2005–06. In this report there is also an article by Tania Paull on how the schemes affect public libraries and lists of the most popular items borrowed from public libraries.
In addition to providing recompense to creators and publishers, the schemes create a wealth of information about the holdings of public and educational libraries. Many librarians use the publicly available data as part of their collection development activities.
