"THE PRACTICE OF CASE MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND HAS A HIGH LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY THAT DEMANDS A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF THE CASE MANAGER TO RIGOROUSLY ASSESS AND MONITOR THE PRACTITIONER’S PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE AND PRACTICE"

The National Self Assessment (NSA) for Case Management Practice Handbook (1st Edition, 2015), is a comprehensive competency/evidence based tool for the  self-evaluation  and validated assessment of  a practitioner’s case management practice and performance. The results of the NSA supports the advancement of the case manager’s practice effectiveness and awareness and informs the development of the case manager’s practice skills and knowledge.

Developed by the CMSA, for the case management practitioner, supervisor and agency, this one-of-its-kind publication provides the platform for the case manager to review, measure and assess their individual professional practice and performance against the national minimum (satisfactory) practice level for case management within Australia and New Zealand.

A subsiduary of the case management Self Assessment Framework (SAF), the NSA lists the guiding principles for each of the four (4) national standards of practice for case management. Further, it assesses the practitioner against the required minimum (satisfactory) level of professional practice and evidence required to demonstrate compliance with the CMSA National Standards of Practice for Case Management and the National Code of Ethics for Case Management.

When completing the NSA, the practitioner is prompted to provide examples of evidence (proof) of their practice so as to substantiate their compliance to the required national benchmark (minimum level) of practice for case management. Conversely, where a practitioner is unable to demonstrate compliance they are required to identify actions for implementation to ensure future compliance. An additional level of rigour is then applied to the NSA process by the supervisor, who reviews and critiques the case manager's self assessment for the purpose of verifying the assessment and providing feedback of their practice and performance. This may include any identified  areas of non-compliance and opportunities for practice development and advancement.

Detailed in its content, this publication presents the practitioner and/or supervisor with an introduction to the purpose of the profession of case management, a comprehensive definition of case management and explanation of the term case manager. It affords the reader with the necessary information to complete the NSA, including the scope and purpose, interpretation, and application of the NSA. Instructions for scoring and recording the results of the self assessment and validated assessment within the NSA record are included.  Purposely colour coded to match the National Standards of Practice for Case Management (3rd Revised Edition, 2013), the practitioner and supervisor can navigate with confidence between the chapters and pages of both publications.

An essential handbook for all practitioners and agencies, this publication includes a glossary of 90 relevant key terms and definitions specific to the specialist practice of case management and the self assessment process.

Whether you are a Certified Case Manager™, experienced practitioner,  new to the profession or responsible for the supervision of case managers, this handbook will provide you with the tools to inform case management practice and attain the evidence (sought by funding bodies and/or employers) of a practitioner's satisfactory level of professional competency to perform the role of case management.

A Companion Workbook to the National Self Assessment for Case Management Practice Handbook (1st Edition, 2015), is also available to purchase online. We recommend the National Self Assessment for Case Management Practice Workbook (1st Edition, 2015) to the case management practitioner, supervisor and/or agency as the preferred method of recording the NSA so as to promote efficacy, congruency and accuracy in the NSA process, documentation and final record. This comprehensive, stand-alone document of evidence, includes a contemporaneous record of completion e.g. agency details, names, position titles, dates and signatories.
