Struggling to change: the Indonesian Parliament in an era of Reformasi

5 Feb 2003
Description

In late 2002 Australia's Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) commissioned a study of the Indonesian Parliament to increase understanding of its developing role, in the process of democratization in Indonesia. The research found, among other things, a huge political shift has taken place in Indonesia over the past few years, but the changes have not been revolutionary. One of the key problems is that the institutions of state in which popular expectations have been vested, are barely equipped to push forward a process of democratisation and to deal with the country's economic and political crises.
