In 2014 a Special Issue (29-4) of New Zealand Sociology on the "History of Sociology in New Zealand" was compiled (Crothers, 2014) in honour of the 50th year of the (Australasian's) association's establishment in 1963 - see Appendix. This issue covered histories of five of the departments which have been the main institutional repositories of academic Sociology in New Zealand. However, two were left out and this gap is repaired in this second issue with contributions on Massey and Lincoln. There has been very limited sociology development outside universities. The Open Polytechnic has been the main exception. And sociology teaching in secondary schools has been sporadic (cf. Dixon, 2015). In addition, a biography of Prof. David Thorns was commissioned in large part to point to his many organisational engagements which support the development of sociology in New Zealand and world-wide.
