National Shelter, Community Sector Banking and SGS Economics and Planning have formed a partnership to develop and release the Rental Affordability Index (RAI). The RAI is intended to complement the Housing Affordability Index (HAI) developed by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Housing Industry Association (HIA). The Rental Affordability Index is released biannually.

This release of the RAI highlights that pensioners and working parents have been priced out of the rental market in all metropolitan areas across Australia. Rental affordability dropped over the last quarter in all metropolitan areas, except Perth.
