| HTML | Attitudes towards divorce |
16 March 2009Divorce trends have sparked a great deal of research into and debates about key reasons behind these trends. Included here are the roles of pre-separation difficulties, the separation itself, and post-separation upheavals in explaining children's elevated risk of negative developmental outcomes.
The general public is unlikely to be aware of all this research. Rather, their views about marriage and divorce are likely to be shaped by their beliefs about the significance of marriage vows and the impacts on couples and any children of sustaining unhappy marriages or achieving divorce.
This paper examines the attitudes of Australians regarding divorce through analysis of data from the 2005 wave of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey.
