Australia's commitment in Afghanistan: moving to a more comprehensive approach

02 September 20101 August 2010 witnessed the formal transfer of command of the erstwhile Task Force Uruzgan from the Netherlands to the multinational Combined Team-Uruzgan (CTU); in which Australian Defence Force personnel now comprise the greater number of coalition forces operating in a dangerous province where they have served since 2005.

This ASPI Policy Analysis paper discusses the implications of Australia’s new role in Uruzgan. It advances a number of recommendations focused around a ‘comprehensive approach’ to how we can, together with our coalition partners, better manage the transition of security in Uruzgan to an Afghan government lead, while building its capacity for improved governance and long-term socioeconomic growth.

In May 2011 the Federal Government announced that the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) would commence operations from 1 July 2012 and that it would initially be responsible for determining the legal status of groups seeking charitable, public benevolent institution, and other not-for-profit (NFP) benefits on behalf of all Commonwealth agencies.
