| Australia's involvement in Afghanistan: revised facts and figures |
02 December 2011This Background Note revises material concerning Afghanistan previously released by the Parliamentary Library to assist Members and Senators prepare for Parliamentary discussions on Afghanistan.
Developments since October 2010
Since the last (and first) Parliamentary debate about Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan in October 2010, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has lost a further 11 members in the conflict. Notwithstanding the tragedy of these incidents’, the most concerning development is that four of those deaths were the result of attacks by rogue Afghan National Army (ANA) members. Although the motives for the attacks, at this time, are unknown, Australia is not the first International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) contributing country to experience such incidents.
