Children's participation in cultural and leisure activities, Australia

30 October 2009This publication presents results from the survey of Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities conducted in April 2009. While the publication primarily provides information about the participation of children aged 5 to 14 years in cultural, sporting and other leisure activities, details on children's use of the Internet and mobile phones are also presented.

The 2009 survey of Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities was conducted throughout Australia as part of the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) Monthly Population Survey (MPS). This survey is the fourth on the topic of children's participation in culture and leisure activities, the previous surveys being conducted in April of 2000, 2003 and 2006. Information was collected from any responsible adult in the household who was asked to respond on behalf of the children in the household.

On 18 November 2011, Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Senator the Hon Kate Lundy, announced the establishment of an independent panel of eminent community leaders to conduct an inquiry into Australian Government services to ensure they are responsive to the needs of Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
