Constitutional reform and Indigenous peoples

10 September 2010This research brief provides an overview of a research project being conducted by the Indigenous Law Centre looking at reform of the Australian Constitution concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Constitutional Reform and Indigenous Peoples project will examine the history of constitutional development relating to Indigenous people since Federation, evaluate the current position of Indigenous people under the Constitution, and consider proposals for Indigenous-related constitutional reform.

On 18 November 2011, Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Senator the Hon Kate Lundy, announced the establishment of an independent panel of eminent community leaders to conduct an inquiry into Australian Government services to ensure they are responsive to the needs of Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
