Four languages, four stories

18 June 2010This article is adapted from a new Australian Government report, The Current State of Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean Language Education in Australian Schools: Four Languages, Four Stories. The report summarises findings from four separate reports on each language. It also notes that education in each of the four languages is distinct in terms of its history, scale of operation, support base and rationale, and also in the nature of its student group and the typical profile of its teachers. If students are to be engaged with Asian languages in Australian schools, these differences must be acknowledged and must inform planning.
