13 May 2011Global poverty has complex causes and wide-ranging effects. In this essay Michelle Sowey examines the scale of the problem together with its impacts. It also considers a range of approaches to reducing poverty, and reviews the status of global action aimed at achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. The essay concludes with a reminder of the great human significance of alleviating poverty. Published in February 2011

In May 2011 the Federal Government announced that the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) would commence operations from 1 July 2012 and that it would initially be responsible for determining the legal status of groups seeking charitable, public benevolent institution, and other not-for-profit (NFP) benefits on behalf of all Commonwealth agencies.
