| Government initiatives to develop the UK social economy |
05 November 2004The Blair government has pursued three interrelated sets of initiatives: the encouragement of philanthropy, the rebuilding of capacity in the voluntary and community sector, weakened by decades of government exploitation, and the fostering of social enterprise. These initiatives have been fostered by a wide range of government departments, not only the Home Office and the Cabinet Office, but the Department of Trade and Industry, the Bank of England, and, most notably, the Treasury. Andrew Passey and Mark Lyons provide a detailed analysis of these developments and identify the key factors that led to this amazing spurt of important and creative policy making.
