Guess who's going to the gallery? (Year 2)

A strategic audience evaluation and development study for galleries in NSW – Sydney metro report

18 August 2009This study aims to draw a picture of the type of people who visit NSW galleries and this year’s results shatter some of the myths associated with gallery goers.

According to this report, if you put five people in front of a painting, photograph or video installation it is likely that:

• One of them will speak a language other than English at home;
• At least one of them will be a tourist;
• You will have someone from every income group;
• You will have someone from every age group
• You will have someone from each level of education; and
• Two of them will be male.

The report presents the second year of research which began in August 2008 and concluded in February 2009, with 2,239 responses collected in 10 galleries across Metropolitan Sydney.

NB. Currently several summaries and key findings are available at this site and the full report is available from Museums and Galleries NSW - contact details on the same page.
