02 September 2010The rate of Australia’s population growth has increased significantly over the last five years largely driven by an increase in net overseas migration (NOM). The largest contribution to NOM in recent years has been from people on temporary visas—mostly comprised of overseas students and temporary skilled migrants.
Although permanent migration intakes over the last few years have been high in comparison to previous years, Australia’s recent population growth predominantly reflects a significant increase in temporary, not permanent migration.
