Sending the right message: use and access of ICT for communicating messages of health and wellbeing to CALD communities

07 June 2010

This report provides a broad understanding of the range of experiences and barriers in accessing and using ICT to communicate about health and wellbeing, and policy and practice options for future development and experimentation when working with CALD communities.

The report presents findings of an exploratory, qualitative research project funded by VicHealth and supported by the Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives, Victoria University. It was based on a literature review and fieldwork conducted across three contrasting culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities (Vietnamese, Sudanese and Samoan) and with a diverse range of health service providers and key community and government stakeholders. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were conducted with more than a hundred people across three communities and twenty health service providers and key community support organisations.

This report and project is being profiled by Dr Ben O’Mara and Professor Helen Borland at Diversity in Health 2010 conference, 7-9 June, Melbourne Exhibition centre, and will also be discussed as part of a special eHealth Hypothetical session at the conference.
