Standards for teaching: theoretical underpinnings and applications

25 July 2007This report is a critical review of the literature on the application of professional standards to teachers' practice. It looks at where professional standards sit in the complex mix of factors that can support teachers' professional capacity, how standards can support teacher learning, which models enhance and which detract from teachers' professional learning and the profession's overall capacity, and whether the documented strengths of working with professional standards can be gained in other ways.
