| Virtual world is the safest for miners |
19 August 2008Mining in South Australia is set to become a whole lot safer, thanks to the world of virtual reality and video games. A $430,000 collaborative project involving the University of Adelaide will use simulators to train prospective miners in one of the world's most hazardous environments. Associate Professor Anton van den Hengel, Director of the University's Australian Centre for Visual Technologies, is partnering with the University of NSW, as well as TAFE SA and the South Australian mining industry to induct staff at BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam mining site. The simulators - reflecting genuine hazards - will specifically concentrate on training miners working at heights, where ladders, scaffolds and elevated work platforms are extensively used.
