Yet the National Museum - like museums around the world - has to make a place for itself not only in a national context but in a global one. On the Museum's 10th anniversary its Director, Andrew Sayers, explores the new phenomenon of the 'world museum' that has developed as institutions in Britain, Europe and the United States have become engaged with global communities, including Australia.

In May 2011 the Federal Government announced that the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) would commence operations from 1 July 2012 and that it would initially be responsible for determining the legal status of groups seeking charitable, public benevolent institution, and other not-for-profit (NFP) benefits on behalf of all Commonwealth agencies.
