Water Information

04 November 2010The Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, Senator Don Farrell, officially launched the national Water Storage information website on October 21, 2010.

For the first time Australians can see clearly where and how much water is available across our nation and compare how various states, cities and basins are faring.

This new product is an important step in providing the Australian community with a consistent and comprehensive national picture of Australia's water resources.

The three-year project was delivered with cooperation and commitment from the states and territories that provided data from over 250 water storages around the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology's website covers more than 90 per cent of the water volume in Australia's publicly-owned storages.

The information on the Water Storage website gives users the ability to compare volumes of water held in different parts of the country.

Users can also scan information at a range of scales such as national, state, drainage division, supply system and capital city, or for individual storages.

Users can also see how storage levels have changed over a 12-month period.

The national Water Storage information is the first of many new water information products from the Australian Water Resources Information System and is the first step in a long-term strategy to improve the understanding of Australia's water availability, condition and use.

Having the ability to access national water information at a single site, will lead to enhanced community understanding and better-informed management of Australia's water.
