The Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) has officially launched their biennial Growing Up in Queensland project which encourages young people to: Step Up! Speak Out! Make your Voice Heard!
The lives of children and young people have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we know that in times of difficulty, it is the voices of children and young people that are often least heard. It is crucial that we give our children and young people the opportunity to express their views regarding their communities and share their hopes and dreams for the future. The Growing Up in Queensland project amplifies their voices, allowing them to reach those in government, policy developers, decision makers and business leaders.
QFCC’s Principal Commissioner Cheryl Vardon believes that while adults are keeping our community safe, it is important we make sure our children and young people are still heard. “By listening and understanding the goals, ideas and worries of children and young people, leaders and decision makers can influence meaningful and sustained change,” Ms Vardon said. “Using the responses from young Queenslanders we can start to make decisions about the future and map out better ways to support them.”
In 2018, we visited 62 schools across the state and heard from more than 7,000 children and young people through a variety of engagement methods. The project received positive attention from government departments and non-government organisations. This year, children and young people aged 4-18 years will have the opportunity to step up, speak out and make their voices heard by contributing an artwork (4-7 years), writing a postcard (8-18 years) or filling out a survey (8-18 years) via our secure online platform.
The QFCC invites you to share this opportunity via your professional networks, and with the children and families you work with. Together, we can make sure all children have an opportunity to make their voices heard.
