The opportunity costs of the status quo in the Thamarrurr Region

Government expenditure Aboriginal Australians Australia

This report by John Taylor and Owen Stanley was originally prepared as part of the Council of Australian Governments' Indigenous Community Coordination Pilot trial at Wadeye in the Northern Territory. The study aimed at answering questions from the COAG partners as to the opportunity cost of sustaining the status quo in the Thamarrurr region, given the substantial deficits in economic activity, infrastructure and human capital identified by the trial. The analysis reveals that, after accounting for all government dollars and transfer payments expended on Thamarrurr residents, far less is spent per head than is spent on the average resident of the Northern Territory.
