A prominent academic says his work exposing the Chinese Communist Party's influence in Australia has been censored because of fears over how Beijing may retaliate.

Publisher Allen & Unwin decided at the last minute to drop the book because they feared 'retaliation' from Beijing through a number of possible venues.

Author Clive Hamilton says the decision was particularly worrying since the publisher was responding to general air of menace rather than a specific threat.
