Description
After a long and heated campaign, last year Australia became the 26th country to legalise same-sex marriage.
During that campaign, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called for a religious freedom review amid pressure from some Coalition conservatives who wanted to see religious exemptions built into the bill to amend the Marriage Act.
When Ireland legalised same-sex marriage in 2015, conservatives held similar concerns there.
Orla Howard is the Deputy Chair of Marriage Equality in Ireland — she led the campaign in 2015 and has seen what's happened in the years since.
