The UK Arts and Humanities Research Council provides funding for students undertaking Masters degrees and doctoral research in the arts and humanities. Approximately 40 per cent of their funding is spent in support of postgraduate research and training. In 2005/06 this amounted to just over 33 million. It is important for the AHRC to understand the impact of its investment in terms of training provision, the career paths of its students and their career development. In 2006 they commissioned the consultants DTZ Research & Consulting (with Swift Research) to find out from recent award holders how important the qualification they had gained had been to their professional development. Their findings show that higher degrees supported by the AHRC lead to significant career progress.
