Playing the Game: The allocation of funding through Commonwealth sport facility programs over the past 25 years

5 Mar 2007

Over the past 25 years the Commonwealth has committed to several sport facility funding programs. However, in each case the distribution of projects funded, and total funds allocated has been concentrated into marginal electorates. With a greater number of projects being funded per marginal electorate than per fairly safe electorate or safe electorate, there is a strong indication that the objective allocation of funding to meet program goals and policy initiatives has been undermined by political interference. This paper uses quantitative analysis to reveal these trends on a national level for some programs, and with a focus on Victoria and NSW for larger programs, leaving the efficiency of the programs tarnished and requiring the role of the Commonwealth in this sort of funding to be questioned.
