Briefing paper

SDG 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

23 Oct 2018
Description

In September 2015, the United Nations unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda, seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to shape international efforts to promote a sustainable, peaceful and equitable world by 2030. Each Goal is accompanied by a set of more specific targets with indicators to measure progress. These goals have subsequently come to shape the agendas of the developing world and development actors alike, including among them the European Union.

This briefing paper examines SDG 1 – End poverty in all its forms everywhere – examining the emergence of poverty reduction onto the global development agenda, considering complexities with the concept as defined by the SDGs, and highlighting the place of the poverty reduction focus in European Union development policy.
