Key Recommendations:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples must have the ability to develop and determine any policy/program affecting them and administer such programs through their own institutions. When Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples take charge of developing their own strategies, they better reflect their interests, values, vision and concerns, increasing ownership and accountability.
  • The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Strategy should include strategic actions that recognise and address the impact of intergenerational trauma (truth telling and healing process), racial discrimination and which foster Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ right to self-determination.
  • Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ healing be recognised as a priority area for community-driven action, and ensure accountability (through accountability frameworks).
  • Reducing high rate of suicide especially among young peoples, needs to be a priority in this healing strategy.
