Description

In May 2016, the City of Yarra, in partnership with Cities of Melbourne, Moreland and Brimbank, the Green Infrastructure Research Group, and the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action, commenced the ‘Embedding Green Infrastructure Best Practice Toolkit’ project. The toolkit was developed over two years via multi-council input with the intention to embed evidence-based green infrastructure (GI) outcomes effectively into local government decision making and operations, to increase tree planting, water sensitive urban design and other green (i.e. natural, blue/green) infrastructure into local government streetscape works. While the benefits of urban greening for improved liveability are well documented, the transition from policy to action is not occurring consistently or at the scale required as the process is seen to be difficult, time consuming, expensive and not-core infrastructure.
