Australians are expected to manage their own career and learning, but this expectation may be unrealistic given changing workforce demands and industry restructures facing Australians. This report explains multiple career transitions, why they can be challenging and how quality career services deliver individual, social and economic outcomes.

Every Australian will experience multiple career transitions across their lifespan. Regardless of their character, a career transition is a process that requires skilful management. The report shows how people gain specific benefits from quality professional career support, including finding satisfying work and building hope and resilience. It captures sixteen success factors for designing just, effective, and well managed industry transition processes, and recommends seven actions to further invest in essential career transition support and services to help Australians meet these challenges.

The Career Development Association Australia (CDAA) offers seven actions to further invest in essential career transition support and services to help Australians meet these challenges.

  1. Update and further implement the Australian government’s National Career Development Strategy.
  2. Increase awareness of career support and services by the National Careers Institute.
  3. Establish a sound foundation in career management skills by all governments.
  4. Evaluate all government career services.
  5. Further adjust employers’ recruiting and retention practices.
  6. Ensure regions affected by major transitions are supported with quality, long-term transition processes.
  7. Ensure career services are provided by qualified Career Development Practitioners.
