This article looks into building new, ‘greener’ buildings and encouraging a more environmentally friendly way of living.  As the world population increases and becomes concentrated in cities, apartment living is on the rise. The trouble is, most of our existing apartments have been constructed according to a worldview developed in a different time when the stresses of our way of life on the planet were not so obvious. Our current way of living in these structures (that is according to their design principles) is unsustainable as it creates a much bigger ecological footprint for each individual than is necessary and therefore reduces our ability to live within the planet’s carrying capacity. In this paper Phillipa suggests that the solution to build new, ‘greener’ buildings that is often recommended further exacerbates this problem. Instead we should be looking to question the social, economic and environmental systems that inform the way we live in them and make changes to these.
