Held in November 2023, the Reconciliation and Education: Past-Present-Future forum brought together education leaders and stakeholders from every state and territory in the teaching of First Nations histories and cultures. The purpose of the forum was to work towards a more collaborative, consolidated approach to reconciliation and education, and consider the future direction of Indigenous education and the reconciliation-in-education ecosystem.
This report summarises the key discussions and outcomes of the forum, capturing the key points in the hope that First Nations panellists and stakeholders do not carry the burden of repeatedly being asked to share their stories and insights. The authors observe that significant work still needs to be done to actively honour the work to date; by recording and sharing the outcomes of the forum, the report seeks to progress the subject onward to action and substantive change.
The forum itself was structured around an exploration of what could be learned from the past, present and futures of reconciliation and education. Through this, organisers worked toward an action plan that seeks to drive reconciliation in and through the sector.
Recommendations
- Build on past work by understanding, acknowledging, and honouring the history of Indigenous education and the contributions of First Nations peoples and organisations.
- Strengthen education policy and implementation by revisiting, strengthening, and recommitting to education policies that promote reconciliation, ensuring First Nations voices are central to policy and decision-making processes.
- Develop a coordinated and collaborative approach across the education sector, working together towards shared goals and advocating for positive change.
- Increase financial and non-financial resources to support teachers and school communities in implementing the aspirations of Indigenous peoples in their work.
