Summary report to the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee

16 Jun 2013

This report is an update on the implementation of recommendations of World Heritage Committee decision: 36 COM 7B.8, Great Barrier Reef (Australia) (N 154).

WWF and AMCS remain concerned that neither the Australian nor Queensland governments are adequately addressing the World Heritage Committee’s recommendations given the serious nature of the threats to the property. While there has been some progress since previous reports, in particular in relation to the announcement of further funding for water quality measures, there has also been inertia on some key recommendations, apparent delays in finalising the draft Strategic Assessments and considerable further wind backs and undermining of protections for the Reef particularly under Queensland legislation.

Prepared by the World Wildlife Fund Australia (WWF-Australia) and the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS).
