It may be that being ‘queer’ or ‘gay’ is no longer provocative, dissident or shocking, at least in the major cities of Australia, or in Western Europe or parts of North America, but in other parts of the world, homosexuality provokes violence and repression, and gay men and women have to find their own avenues, public or clandestine, for artistic and literary expression.
