The demography of Australia's academic workforce: patterns, problems and policy implications

Demographics Australia

This paper by Graeme Hugo from the 2004 Monash Seminars on Higher Education Policy analyses the demography of the staff of Australian universities, especially as reflected in the 2001 population census. It is shown that Australian university teaching staff have a significantly older age structure than the workforce as a whole. It is argued that over the next decade, Australian universities face their largest recruitment task since the 1960s when the large baby boom cohorts began to reach university entry age at the same time as participation rates rose.
