A new progressive think tank: will it make a difference?

The Australian Right’s major think-tank, the Centre for Independent Studies, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The event passed without notice for most people on the Left and progressive side of politics. But we ignore the CIS at our peril. Rather, we can draw valuable lessons from its accomplishments. Given that there are several quiet moves to establish new progressive think tanks, it is worth exploring the reasons for the success of the CIS. Without some bold new ideas, even the most heavily-armoured progressive think-tank will miss the target, writes David McKnight.
