The accountability of private schools to public values

26 Aug 2004

Deb Wilkinson, Richard Denniss and Andrew MacIntosh highlight the need to tighten the current accountability arrangements that cover private schools in Australia to ensure that private schools teach public values. They highlight a range of exemptions that private schools curently have from anti-discrimination legislation allowing them to expel students on the basis of their sexuality, pregnancy or marital status.

The paper also highlights the lack of transparency in the funding of private schools and outlines the extent to which substantial taxpayer funding of elite private schools, in the form of tax deductability of donations, is excluded from the public debate about school funding in Australia.
