This study examines the 99-year lease to Darwin Port sold to Chinese firm Landbridge. It suggests that the examination of the security concerns of this deal by the Australian Government were excessively perfunctory, probably because the company was listed as a "private enterprise". This claim is shown to be completely untrue, with both the Communist Party of China and the People's Liberation Army exercising influence over the activities of this company. It is suggested that Darwin is a key element in China's 21st Century Maritime Silk Route and forms part of wider and longer associated strategic aims.
