South Australian murder appeal could have significant repercussions

Criminal justice Criminal law Forensic sciences Procedural justice High Court Australia

A man's bid to have his murder conviction overturned in South Australia, which could have repercussions for hundreds of other cases, has split the state's Court of Criminal Appeal and will now go to the High Court of Australia. Frits Van Beelen's appeal comes twenty-five years after he finished serving seventeen years in jail. The appeal calls into question the evidence of forensic expert, Dr Colin Manock, who is thought to have been involved in more than four hundred criminal convictions. Problems with his evidence lead to the release of another man last year, after he served twenty years for murder.
