The battle for academic freedom in Europe

Academic writing Freedom of speech Censorship Academic freedom Hungary

The Central European University (CEU) in Budapest has become a symbolic battleground between liberal internationalism and a rising tide of populist nationalism.

Its future is under threat after the Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, announced new higher education laws, which the University says are a “premeditated political attack on a free institution”.

President and Rector of the Central European University, Professor Michael Ignatieff, joins Professor Glyn Davis, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, on the Policy Shop podcast to examine the CEU’s fight for survival.
